Got the replacement pump installed without issue. In fact, it was downright easy. If anyone is uncertain about a fuel pump replacement, don't be. I drove the car til the DTE-ometer showed 15 miles, then got to work. Had the tank out in maybe 30 minutes, swapped pumps, and put it back. It was no problem to hold the tank up with one hand while installing the straps. Easy work.
Oddly, after two 15 miles drives and two 10 mile drives, the car did a really weird thing. 10 mile drive -> sitting for 20 minutes -> restart it shuddered pretty dramatically for a couple minutes - not stalling, but nearly. I was not there, but my girl was freaked out and took another car.
When I checked it out an hour later, no codes were set. I put another 40 minutes (maybe 20 miles, lots of traffic) on it, let it sit for 20 minutes, and restarted it... no problem. Drove another couple miles with a hot restart, no problem. I installed my UltraGauge in it just to make realtime monitoring of fuel pressure easier and nothing seems abnormal. No CEL, nothing pending.
After another pair of 10 mile trips, I got it to shudder again - exact same circumstances as my girl! I'd driven 10 miles/20 minutes to lunch, ran inside, got lunch came back out... stumble! It took about a minute of sitting there idling to start, and once it started it didn't stop in the 3-4 minutes I waited. Fuel pressure was rock-solid during the time, as was O2 sensors, coolant temps, MAF - everything I could monitor. The only sign of anything happening was a 10 degree change in spark angle, which I'm pretty sure was a result of changing engine speed and not the cause of or directly related to the problem.
After looking at every sensor reported to the Ultragauge I drove away. No drivability problems, and even sitting in traffic the problem did not come back. 10 more miles broken up by a three minute stop/restart. Still no check engine light.
Virtually positive it's early signs of ignition coil failure. These are the first warm days we've had this year and I'm betting higher ambient temps combine with heat soak push the coils.
I was debating between either plugs & coils or front door locks for March... looks like it's gonna be coils. ;) Not mad at this repair with 100k on the clock - I knew when I bought it I was going to do it. Hopefullt that's all it is.
