Here is my take on the 4-wheel drive system based solely on the Volvo's using a very similar Haldex system. There are so few to almost non XWD Saab's in this neighborhoods so I don't know more about them then what has been written here.
It's a piece of crap system with several things that goes wrong and now we are also seeing the later generation Volvo's (P3 cars) with pinion bearing wear ala old 900 manual transmissions.
It could be a Southern CA problem since the Haldex system never gets used compared to cars living in snowy condition where they should be.
Volvo's don't have the eLSD so that is not a problem with them but the control module goes bad, temp sensors inside goes bad and the hydraulic pump wears out and oil gets contaminated quickly.
I tell all my customers that unless they have a really, really good reason to own a 4-wheel drive car in LA, they should stay away from them.
The once a year trip to Mammoth for skiing don't count. You could rent a car for that trip.
