secondary fuel sender in XWD Posted by jackosaab [Email] (#2004) [Profile/Gallery] (more from jackosaab) on Sun, 7 May 2017 06:29:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hey folks, I have been chasing an issue with my fuel gauge, and wondering what to do next? I posted previously and some of you already helped: 2009, 9-3 Sportcombi, Aero, V6 XWD 72,000 miles. When I bought this used car, the fuel gauge read between 1/2 and 1/4 (read 0 when car off). I had my mechanic drop the tank and replace the pump with level sensor. Then the gauge read between 100% and 1/2 (read 1/2 when car off). At your good advice, I then brought the gauge cluster to BBA Remanufacturing and had the stepper motors replaced, now the gauge reads between 1/2 and 1/4 again (read 0 when car off). So, then I found out that I have a secondary fuel sender, and I do really wish my mechanic knew that about the XWD, obviously I would have had him change it when he dropped the tank. Recently I went to a Saab dealer and I spent $60 to have them help diagnose with the Tech 2. They could not find the option to "run the gauge" up to full, half, and empty to test the gauge response (is that weird?) They took a screen shot of the Tech2 Fuel Level Screen for me it reads:
Fuel Level (ECM) = 48.5 Litres
Fuel Level (Bus from ECM) = 28 Litres
Fuel Level to Gauge = 28.1 Litres
Fuel Level Sensor = 2.3 V
Fuel Level Sensor Secondary = 0.0 V
Now I am more upset that my original mechanic probably did not even run this diagnosis, and maybe does not know how to use the Tech2, but that is a side issue now. So, given that screen shot, it looks to me like the new fuel sender at 2.3V is probably fine, and the secondary sender is shot, so the ECM is telling the gauge that the level is roughly the average of the two voltage values. Make sense? Does it make sense that the gauge reading would have changed from changing the pump & sender? and changed again when changing the stepper motors? So, what would you do next? Any more diagnosis before paying to drop the tank and change the secondary sender? The dealer said if they did the work (which I prefer not to), they would check the wires for continuity and the issue could be a broken wire or the ECM misinterpreting the secondary sender. I need a better shop near Somerville MA, so this would not have been such a goose chase. Thanks for reading!
