My daughter's '11 has a similar affliction: gradual loss of refrigerant. Whatever is leaking for you that's a $150 part is not her problem, though: the shop reported the problem was the evaporator coil.
Her intermediate solution is to add refrigerant as needed, a task you can easily screw up because the compressor is a "constant pressure" design. You can buy cans of refrigerant that come complete with a connector hose and pressure gauge, and carefully add refrigerant. Remember that adding too little does no harm, but adding a little too much can cause a bigger problem. I think the longer term solution will be an electric vehicle, as her daily commute is 100 miles round trip. The '08 Kombi, with half again the miles, has had no such problems.
In addition to the fuel savings, she has been seduced by one electric car's maintenance schedule.
10,000 miles: rotate the tires.
30,000 miles: change the cabin air filter.
150,000 miles: change the battery coolant.
