Hi Justin,
Tiny VQ? That's exactly the sound I DON'T want to hear!
The track I go to is for amateurs like me, so heat is not really an issue (20 minutes sessions, 6 per day).
The V6 XWD exhaust is different than the V6 FWD as it has a very small resonator just at the junction of the extension pipe and the 2 connector pipes for the rear boxes. From other forums, this tiny resonator is why the XWD has a different and deeper sound than the FWD's. (see the pic in the link) The 4-cyl system I bought is identical in form but with different boxes.

Your suggestion of just removing one muffler was my first idea before I secured this whole system. Now, since the system is complete in one piece with hangers, it makes sense to just open and gut the rear cans so it will still be structurally sound and easy to swap when time comes. I can even weld in a perforated pipe (or even a mini-Dynomax style muffler) in there between the inlet and the outlet and recap for a complete stealthy exhaust system.
Fist operation this week-end: install the exhaust from the 2011 4-cyl on my 2008 V6 XWD to hear if there's a difference.
From there, I will decide if this very nice part will see the cutter and the welder or if the older one will be sacrified...
More to come!
