These engines are not that failure prone except worn intake valves, balance shaft tensioner and water pump but at your engines mileage anything could be possible.
It would be better if you KNEW what was wrong and not just what they THINK is wrong.
I had one 9-3 one time where one of the cam shaft sprockets had come loose and moved on the shaft. For some unknown reason, it did not crash the valves and I was able to move the sprocket back to proper timing and engine started. That customer was extremely lucky.
It all depends on the rest of the car if it is worth it to install a used engine.
It will probably be much more than $1200.00 to have a shop replace the engine so you have to think about what the car is worth to you.
