key stuck in ignition

2009 93 Aero V6 XWD about 86k
I have been having intermittent issues with the key sticking in the ignition switch. After searching this forum it seems that this is almost always a dying battery issue. Most recently, my battery had discharged (likely due to a number of short trips failing to recharge it) and then after recharging it the key stuck issue became more frequent. My indy spent some time trying to diagnose the issue and replaced the battery because it was only reaching 75% max charge. The problem has now happened twice with the new battery. The first time I was able to extricate the key by disconnecting the ground terminal for 30 seconds and then reconnecting. Today, I came home after a 50 mile drive and once again the key was stuck. I disconnected the ground terminal for 30-plus seconds and reconnected it. This time not only would the key not release, but the car would not start (ie, not turn over). Interestingly, after turning the key to the on position, all checks were OK, but the check engine light remained on.
Does anyone have a clue?
