Coolant in Oil Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 8 May 2019 16:55:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I did a oil analysis on our two daily drivers last month, the 9-3 had its first analysis at 100K miles and the 9-5 had its second analysis at 195K miles. Blackstone Labs detected antifreeze in the oil of the '06 9-3.
For the past couple years this car has required an additional 1/4 inch of coolant in the over-flow tank every 3-4 months. What I considered to be a nuisance amount, possibly from the recovery bottle vent since there was no evidence of any leaks. Well, obviously I was wrong and coolant is showing up in the engine oil. Luckily all metal wear numbers are low so the antifreeze has not caused lubricant failure - yet.
What are the most logical sources for an anti-freeze leak to oil sump. Head gasket? Although this usually manifests itself as leaking into the combustion chamber. Coolant Pump? Isn't the coolant pump on the 2.0T engine buried within the timing chamber? Oil Cooler? That may actually be the least expensive repair as it sits atop the tranny. Turbo? That is another location where oil and water are in close proximity, separated by seals on rotating elements. Other possible suggestions?
I will NOT be self-performing this repair but looking for possible causes before I drop it off at K&N for repair, who I think may be adding a 'Roger Memorial Service Bay' to their garage soon.
