I am wondering if maybe the problem was and is a weak alternator or failing voltage regulator that is allowing the battery voltage to drop too low.
Not sure about the resurrection feature, but my Canadian classmates in Engineering School swore that in cold weather they got better engine starting by turning on the headlights for a few seconds before cranking. The Profs initially scoffed at this claim then looked at temperature/current diagrams for lead acid batteries and realized that putting a draw on the battery will increase its internal temperature, which in turn increases its power output.
