clutch pedal noise Posted by RonD [Email] (#2620) [Profile/Gallery] (more from RonD) on Mon, 12 Aug 2019 19:01:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |

Driving home tonight there was a relatively loud "crack" when I pushed the clutch pedal in. After that, there was noise from the clutch pedal every time I pushed it in or let it out, when it was closer to the floor on pushing in, and when it was closer to the top of travel on letting out. But the clutch worked consistently.
When I got home I noticed a small yellow plastic rectangle on the driver's side floor board, roughly a half inch long and about 3/8s wide, with some grease on the inside. Popping the under dash panel off, there was a spring about 4 inches long with white caps on both ends, one end propped up against a protrusion on the back side of the clutch pedal and the other end lying loose against the firewall. When I touched it, it fell off the protrusion and dropped to the floorboard. I couldn't see anywhere the upper part of the spring should go (it's a tight fit under there and I'm far from young).
Playing a little in my (short) driveway, the clutch seemed to work well, and it's now in the garage. My question is whether it's safe to drive in for service (former Saab dealer) about 10 miles away, or should I have it towed? And what do I tell the service writer I need replaced?
