Also found that if I would just press on the center of the radio button panel the lights would come on. So, figuring that something in the circuti was broken inside, I pulled the radio and took off the front panel to investigate. Found that one of the feet on the connector on the PC board behind the radio buttons had broken loose. I resoldered the foot, reassembled the unit and the lights work fine again. I hope this can save someone else some frustration.
