2000 Aero - turbo whine. Please help!

My 5 year old Aero 5-speed has clocked up just over 100,000 km.
In the last few days I have for the very first time noticed what I perceive as a turbo whine. It's not the deep grunt you get when flooring it in 5th, but every time I accelerate and then change gear there is a high-pitched whine that falls rapidly in pitch as I let go of the accelerator. It sounds a bit like an 18-wheeler setting off at a green light (OK not quite as loud, but you get the picture).
I have heard this in other turbo cars - but never before in my Aero! And let me just add that this is with the radio OFF, so this noise isn't coming from the speakers!

What could be causing this? Is it a sign that something is going wrong with the turbo charger - or just that my hearing is improving with age ...?
