I don't think it is such a shock to see a manufacturers newest models fall below the industry average in the first year of production. Because the bar has been raised so high. The fact that the RL is still average indicates the CR test vehicle is well below average reliability wise.
In the long term the Japanese cars still prove more reliable because they don't have the electrical problems that tend to crop up on many European makes. A graph in the new CR car issue shows that even VW/Audi has, on average, only 1.8 problems per car OUT TO EIGHT YEARS. I find that mind boggling, considering how the press has trashed the reputation of VW/Audi vis-a-vis industry-wide reliability.
I know the SAAB 9-5 shows a huge drop off in the JD Powers reports as you move to the longer range analysis.(i.e. 3 and 5 year studies)
Consumer Reports and JD Power are the best information that is readily availible to the consumer making new and used car buying decisions. I think ignoring it is a foolish idea.
