Re: Saab wholesaling salvaged DICs from recall? That's an interesting theory, buck. Perhaps Saab is wholesaling out the salvaged (and presumably still good, at least so far) DICs they've replaced during the recall? If memory serves, only one model year of the V6 was included in the recall -- 2001. I don't know how many cars that amounts to, but certainly enough to leave some salvaged DICs floating around.
I'd checked eBay for V6 DICs only since the recall began, so I don't know the history of that seller. I just now looked at "seller's other items," and they are also offering used DICs from 4-cylinder 9-5s (dirt cheap -- $20.00 Buy It Now price). Item description says:
"Good black direct ignition cassettes, removed from cars with 50K to 60K miles. Part number 9197559, TK firmware version 3.4. Excellent used DI for spares in the trunk, don't get stranded!"
I do know that firmware version 3.4 was only for 2002 9-5s, and that only DICs with 3.4 or earlier firmware are subject to free replacement. That doesn't prove your theory, but it certainly supports it.
Someone on the board better versed than I am about the i4 DIC recall numbers might be able to tell us whether those Part Numbers are in the recall. I may be mistaken, but I think the V6 DICs only had one part number for 1999-2003 (when the V6 engine was discontinued), so that could be why the seller didn't list the part number for the V6 pairs.
I could, of course, email the seller and ask where they got their used DICs, but, having bought a pair already, that's almost more trouble than it's worth. As long as the ones I receive are still good, I'll be happy.
At any rate, your theory seems quite plausible.
