Back in Saab's 9000 series during the 1990s, the German-GM auto transmissions were notorious for failure at around 100-120K miles.
By contrast, the 9-5 series uses a very reliable Japanese Aisan-Warner transmission (4-speed in the 1999-2001, 5-speed from 2002 on, if I recall correctly). Both versions are nearly flawless, nice and smooth, and likely to last the life of the car with only routine maintenance.
