Per Saab, the "S" button changes (raises) shift points and increases throttle angle. It appears to have no effect on actual engine output. My guess (never done a stopwatch comparison) is that in either mode, if you floor it there's no difference. It's clear (with my V6) that far less pedal travel is required to accelerate fast using "S". The later (higher RPM) shifts are noticeable too. On the freeway, if I switch "S" off, the speed immediately drops unless press the throttle quite a bit.
Because the transmission is adaptable to your driving, the "S" shift differences are less dramatic if you've been driving hard already.
When I test drove the LPT 4 auto, I put it in "S" and left it there after my initial drive with the saleswoman. I also switched off the TCS. That car was noticeably quicker getting around town that way, but on the open road I really didn't experience a difference.
Does this help?
