I got the SAE paper that I mentioned in an earlier post. It did not go into any more detail than the abstract that I posted. There was no backing up of the tire wear claims, or statement of testing methods. I would like to see how they got the numbers they claim. I have only had tires fail by oxidization on my classic cars, with very old tires. I guess if you kept them long enough you would see am improvement in life. However the way I drive tires don't seem to last very long.
As far as the decrease in noise. I really doubt it. I see no logical reason why it would happen. Reducing unsprung mass is beneficial for handling,ride and noise. A tire is unsprung mass. Although the tire would be slightly lighter the weight difference is so small you would be better off pulling the little rubber nubs off the tire or removing the letters from the side of the tire.
The water does have a much different heat capacity than N2 or O2, and could effect the change in temperature and hence the change in pressure. My guess would be that the water content is not large enough to make a difference, but there I could be wrong. At 100% relative humidity 1 atm, and 25 C, the water content in air is 2% I really don't think this is enough to change things, but I haven't worked it out.
Remember that Coolknight changed not only what he filled his tires with, but also the brand of his tires. I would think that has a much bigger effect on road noise than N2. I am curious if those who have tried it without varying anything else (pressure, tire type etc) can honestly say they notice a difference...
I kinda think it is like a placebo. Give someone a sugar pill, tell them it is a pain killer and their headache might really go away. Tell someone that filling your tires with 90% N2 instead of the 78% normally found in the atmosphere will make them perform better and you might think they do.
Personally I think it is a gimmik. In principle there can be some slight gains by using a light, dry gas. If they are noticeable or not is another story.
