To Coolknight: Not sure if I understood the substance of your message. On one hand you seemed to be critical of US speed limits and safety equipment, then you quote German statistics which attribute 40 % of fatal accidents to speed and poorly equiped or inspected vehicles. Regarding first part, all of us who both think we are the next Michael Shumacher, and drive well maintained high performance sedans might be able to handle higher speedas than many posted limits, but the fact is,we share the roads with less skilled sometimes drunk individuals who are driving 6,000 lb barges called SUVs, long haul trucks etc,and they simply should not be operating like that. To have several distictly different classes of vehicles sharing the road at drastically different speeds is a recipe for disaster. If you carefully examine all of the potential for problems that would exist under this scenario, it becomes obvious that we need to keep speeds in check for the overall good of the public, even if it means that some of us feel we are being held back. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I think the speeds we drive here are more than fast enough considering who we have to drive next to.
