built-in booster seats - worth it?

We have a 2001 wagon on order, and were thinking of getting one of the dealer-installed flip-down booster seats. They didn't have any on the lot for us to try out/look at, so we're a little wary of forking out $600 to have one installed only to find out it's uncomfortable in both the up and down positions. The design in the volvo V70 looked a lot better, and was half the price for twice the seats.
Anyone here have one? How does your kid like it? Is it worth the $$$, or should we just get a strap-in booster seat for $50 instead? My 5 year old likes to be able to see out the window, and he's always kneeling up to look out.
