Methinks you are being to harsh here. We all have had situations where we make certain assumptions, then with time and knowledge come to realize that we will go in a different course of action. The dealer might well have thought that your assessment of the car was it was essentially worthless and the best thing was to send to auction. However once you delivered the car to him and he had a mechanic go over it decided that the issues were relativly simple, and that it was more than worth making those repairs. I overview there are few people on this site who would shoot the horse because the fuel pump needed to be replaced.

In any used car the largest factor is how "clean" the car is. It is vastly easier and less expensive to make repairs, especially in the order of belt, pulley and tensioner than to deal with rust, dents , worn interior, holes in the dash , scratches etc. The other large factor in price then becomes the mileage, with for me is Saab's great little secret. Once a car in general gets near 100,000 miles the public perception is that is about worn out and at least will need to be in the shop with expensive repair bills. So the price is really knocked down with mileage. So we get to buy them at great prices. And in my own experience they have run well and reliably and inexpensively for hundreds of thousands of more miles.

Since you did not describe the rest of the car in terms of appearance and mileage the price/value is unkown.Someone else might be very happy with it.
