Saabs are designed to protect the occuppants, partially through sacrificing the car itself. Safety is foremost in my mind and we have a two totaled cars, both the cause of young driver syndrome but both without injuries to the driver or passenger. We drive nothing else but Saab's in the family because the relation of cost of used Saabs and their provision of very high safety standards. With a new child, I would be looking a making the best choice for providing protection, and you already have one of the best !
The other sad fact is that resale values are so low (good for me and bad for you) and a CARFAX report on your car may indicate your "fender bender" as a more serious item because of the magnitude of the repair. This cannot help your resale value.
I wish you well with your decisions ,which are not easy.
