Because onstar hooks into the whole system of you car. And you are right, it is actually not a hard thing to replace. the wiring is there, they just need to replace the actual unit. it suprises me that they have not come up with a small compact generic unit that would fit in all of their vehicles. I work for verizon wireless in the tech support department, so I don't deal directly with customers who have onstar (different department) but what i think is going to happen is verizon DOES NOT like loosing any customer, so they will probably force gm to get a unit made, that will fit any car, and offer that to the gen public, but then the person who upgrades will have to keep onstar for like 2 years or something.
I haven't heard anything, that is just my opinion.
