last time i went to the auto show i spent a good hour and a half at the saab section. i talked with a saab tech from sweden, he came down for the show. i asked about sport mode. this is what i learned:
ofcourse, it changes the shift patterns, allowing for a downshift at higher than normal rpms and it will also shift later.
the throttle is altered via the electonic "drive by wire" system. what happens is that you actualy get full throttle sooner. about 3/4 to the floor. so in reality if you are at 3/4 throttle in sport mode, you are actualy at wide open throttle. thus pushing it from 3/4th to full does nothing, i think this is kind of cheating. and its why you dont notice much of a diff from regular mode at full throttle.
the thing i was most impressed with done by sport mode was that it incresses the transmission line pressure. meaning harder quicker shifts! this is what i belive to be the best bennifit of sport mode. its noticibly faster shifting if you pay attention to it.
i dont perticuarly like the first two changes, because with a torque peak starting at 1800rpm and ending at 3600rpm there isnt much of a reason to be shifting at 6000rpm. also i like to know exactly where the throttle is. but im now pretty addictid to the crisp shifting of sport mode.
