I don't think it's a problem with your head unit. Some of these cassette adapters work in a weird way, I agree. I've had the same problem you're describing but in a different car. The way I fixed the problem is I pressed the FF or REW (or FLIP sides) button to "play" another area of the tape.

Consider getting an FM transmitter.
