The reason the manual says don't use chains is because of clearances inside the tires. You can put chains on snow tires because they are usually smaller, and give you more clearance. Cable chains are smaller and might work, but if you want to be sure not to cause any damage, and have $200-300 to spend, look for something called spyder spikes. It is a new system that attaches to the wheel and nothing is inside your tire. I bought a pair of cable chains for my 900 to go to Lake Tahoe back in the fall because they require chains when it snows up there. No chains, no skiing- turn around and drive home. My 900 manual says the same thing as my 9-5 manual- chains not recommended. I gambled on the cable chains, and they worked fine. If you are planning on using them on your stock tires, I would get the smallest cables you can find, so they won't rub against the steering system or brakes.
