If you don't know the specific error code, you know nothing. A $150 OBC II reader that reads codes and can erase error codes is all you need. Maybe a friend has one. Once you know the code, do a search here. I have had codes for sticking thermostats, and even a vacuum hose that was off. All solved very easily. You get a check engine light when the computer gets a signal from a sensor that it does not like. You need to know the code so you can solve it.
