FWIW Recently, I had the water pump fail at 135,xxx miles on my 2001 LPT wagon. The bearings in the wp pulley failed, distorting my new serpentine belt(installed at 120,000 miles service).
There was not much time from when it started making a chirping noise until it failed.
I returned the belt to Pep Boys...and because it was a DAYCO COG BELT...it had a lifetime warranty...so Pep Boys replaced it for FREE.
I would think that similar circumstances happened to the alternator in the previous post...the bearings seized up, and distroyed the belt.
I have not used belt dressings since ownership of my classic 1983 SAAB 900, which was driven to over 260,000 miles. I feel Michigan and Colorado weather to be similar.....and would not use dressings on the serp belt of my 9-5.
