Reading this thread reminded me of something from long ago back in 1988 I worked at a car dealership that sold many different brands, but Ferrari and Fiat in particular. The parts mgr. and I became friends and one day he showed me something. First, IIRC Fiat owns Ferrari. For those who remember "Magnum PI", Tom Selleck drove a Ferrari 308GTS and if you remember the headlights flipped up. Fiat made the X1/9 and the headlights also flipped up. So the parts manager pulled out two boxes which contained the exact same headlight motor that flipped the headlights up and down. One said Fiat on the outside of the box and was $70 and the exact same motor except it came in Ferrari 'prancing horse' box was $260!!! Remember this was in 1988 dollars also. So the Fiat part wasn't cheap, but the Ferrari part cost was almost 4 times as much.
With GM trying to cut costs it would be interesting to know all the synergies of the exact same parts and what the cheaper brand part number is that the same as premium brand part. Like finding out that some high dollar part on a Saab is used on a Chevy at a third of the price for example.
