Hi Ed,
I intended to use the Catera oil cooler when I needed to replace my original. I ordered one up, but found that although the dimensions were identical, that they were not the same part. In short, the Catera oil cooler is made of steel and has far fewer cooling fins. In contrast, the Saab oil cooler is made of aluminum and has many more cooling fins.
See my photo comparison here:

Someone on the list explained that the Saab oil cooler must deal with the very hot oil coming from the Turbo, whereas the Catera does not as it is not fitted with a Turbo.
I believe GM/Saab would have used the cheaper of the two parts if they could have. Given they did not, I believe the engineers/designers strongly believed the aluminum cooler was needed on the Saab.
Does it make a difference in real life? I don't know. During my investigation I was told by one dealer that they routinely fit the Catera oil cooler on Saabs when the Saab part was out of stock. Another dealer sent me the Catera oil cooler (charging me the Saab oil cooler price!!!!) and claimed that Saab had switched to the steel oil cooler (they have not done so). Of course, that hearsay, and $5, will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks. I was unwilling to experiment on my engine and spent the bigger bucks on the aluminum oil cooler.
I did the work myself, though, so that saved me a lot of money right there.
Hope this helps!
Regards,
Greg Bender
