Did the Auto Trans flush last weekend on my 1999 LPT. 24mm wrench, and a drain pan is all that's needed. A lift helps. A lot...
Don't know of this trans had ever been flushed in its 157k lifetime. Dipstick showed fluid that was kinda red, but very pale.
First drain didn't look like ATF at all! More like "coffee, regular" (coffee w/cream & sugar for those who aren't familiar with the idiom). Seems this unit (4-speed) drains almost exactly 3 quarts each time, when level on my friend's lift in Maine.
Replaced the plug (remembering to "choke up" on the 24mm wrench), topped up with Castrol Dex/Merc & went on a 10 mile trip "around the block". Back on the lift, and repeated three more times. At the end, the fluid was draining the same color it went in, and the hot ATF was actually cleaning out Kevin's drain pan!
I wasn't having any major issues before, though I had noticed that it was tending to go in and out of lock-up quite audibly while on cruise recently. Much smoother now.
Also did an oil change (Mobil 1 10W40 High Mileage, which meets the same AECA spec as the 0W40), with a fresh oil filter, and a fuel filter change.
Another 3-5k miles, and another oil change and 3 quarts of fresh ATF!
