You're right; AC is not very fixing-friendly. Now that you've done a little fixing of your own, it sounds like Stephen Goldberger's advice is a good idea to get you back to square one. But one small thing that you might look into before sending it out for service is to check the operation of the air recirculation door (a non-Saab AC tech might not check this). It is quite common for the plastic control arm to break off leaving the door inoperable. When this happened on mine it was not initially obvious and I did not know it had occurred (mine did not generate an error code), but when it got to Summer I noticed that the initial cool-down took a long, long time. Normally it got very cold, very fast. After seeing several posts on this board, I did a check by running the fan at high speed, activating the "recirc" control, and listening for a change in the sound of the rushing air. Nothing.
After I made the repair (pretty simple if you have the right sized 6m nut driver), the system performance returned to normal with no other changes. I was quite surprised at the difference in performance.
