That makes sense.
Your pattern of failures/events did not match my alternator failure (Saturday) much at all. I had the battery replaced 2 days earlier (sudden failure to start on that morning) then while near Santa Barbara the battery light came on on a winding highway with no service so I kept going as one light after another after another shone on the dash. By the time I reached CA 154 and 192, the performance was way off and the lights very dim. I got it to 192 and 144 and found a big level spot to call for the towtruck. Nice safe affluent area; I got that part right.
BTW, taking the alternator out the top, past the intake, with the rear mount loosened and the motor raised and rotated towards the radiator, IS the ticket to getting the alternator out and back in. I chose the remanned Bosch unit and NO, they do not provide a pulley. Be careful of those AC lines and expect to get a little scratched up but it can be done in a day.
An 8mm hex for your ratchet is real important, and sections of 8 and 6mm hex section are real helpful for getting the pulleys off.
BIG thanks to all the Saabnet members who described in detail the "out through the top" approach. I am much beholden to you.
