About the same tread on both - both are about 1/2 way through their useable lifespan, so I don't think that this is a major factor. All in all they are pretty similar tires. I had a previous generation of Gislaveds on a Volvo 240 wagon and was very impressed with how that car behaved in the snow, despite being RWD. Gislaved is what Volvo sells at their dealerships.
The XC90 certainly has better absolute traction (because of the AWD and clearance) and you'd have to do something stupid to get stuck. The Saab is good as long as it doesn't get high sided, given that it is an Aero. So far after 4 seasons driving it we've never been stuck - but have had to abandon going up my back alley (it's on a hill) a couple of times due to lack of traction.
I guess my point is that when it comes to safety in everyday winter driving it's not about whether or not you can romp through 30 cm of snow (which I've done in the Volvo on back roads to go backcountry skiing) but how it behaves when you're doing 100 km/hr+ on the highway. In my mind the Saab wins hands-down.
