Seized Engine?

I have an 01 9-5 Aero Wagon, 196K, never with any problems. It has been an extremely reliable car & I love it! However, the other day it died on me & had to be towed home.
I fear that it may be a seized engine. The car was running just fine .... going along at 65 mpg & heard a whine .... sounded like the HVAC fan actually, nothing serious but it continued. I thought that I might check it at the next town. As I came into town, the car just kind of died ... no odd noises, no warning lights, nothing too out-of-the-ordinary. As I tried to crank it over, it cranked slowly, then not at all.
When I checked under the hood I saw metal shavings. I was thinking that an accessory had locked up (alternator, PS, etc). Now that it is in my garage, I can see that it's not an accessory, though I don't know where the metal shaving came from. I tried turning over the engine ... nothing. I then tried rotating the crank with a 27mm socket & long ratchet .... nothing! Won't budge! Engine oil is good, so is transmission fluid.
I also pulled out the spark plugs ... can't see much, but the 2 pistons I see look DRY on top .... plugs are clean & normal.
Any ideas? Could my oil pump have seized up? Should I put a few drops of oil in the cylinders & then try to crank it over? Any idea where to look for the source of the metal filing in the engine compartment?
Any help would be welcomed!
Thanks,
Jonathan
