"When you say 'snip the trunnion right down the middle' I assume you mean cutting it through the side adjacent to the D hole where the shift fits." -- sort of. The trunnions on the jalousie will fit into the indent of the shift lever. Just so I'm clear, that indent and the trunnions will move as you shift the lever, so they're not necessarily lined up with the D.
When you're looking at the jalousie, you'll see on the driver's side of it an extension with a raised notch that will secure the green plastic strip that goes over the letters. Right next to that is the driver's side trunnion on the jalousie (basically a cylindrical piece of the material that will fit into the indent/channel on the shift lever). Opposite that is the passenger side trunnion on the jalousie -- that's the one you want to cut right down the middle through the trunnion itself.
When you put everything back together, the passenger side trunnion that you cut stays "assembled" in the channel/indent of the shift lever. The cut should be nearly invisible.
But you're right, it sounds more complicated without staring right at it. It will all become clear once you have it disassembled or have the new jalousie in hand.
