Which is why I can lease a Viggen for less than a Jetta - once you factor in the end of year fire sale incentives, the depreciation is incredibly low. Even though the lease rates are low, you do have to pay the interest on the higher note you're carrying, so you end up paying as much or more in interest than in depreciation over the life of the lease.
Saab is playing a dangerous game. Personally, I think they will be in big trouble once consumer expectation of low resale runs up against the low prices buyers are actually paying. Imagine trying to sell a '99 or '00 Viggen right now! Now think of what the actual resale will be once all these cars start to come off lease in a few years. If you think Saab residuals are low now, wait a few years when they're around 40%. The press will have a time with that!
