I read a post on this board some time ago (can't find it now) that referenced the "official" method by which this occurred. As I recall, the trick involved accelerating to the maximum boost in the range of 3,000 - 3,500 rpm and sustaining it for something like three seconds. It was suggested that, with an automatic, that you take it to a long grade and, in third gear, give it enough gas to raise the boost to the maximum, but not too much so as to cause it to downshift. The three important criteria were maximum possible boost, middle rpms, and sustain it for a period of time.
I'm thinking this allowed the ecu to learn the maximum boost and timing advance just prior to the onset of detonation, but that's just my speculation.
