Seat removal with no power?

I found a great pair of front seats at a local salvage yard. Guy pulled the drivers A-OK by cutting the wires (in car, down from the harness) & jumping 12V power. He tried the same on the passengers and said it wouldn't work. Any ideas I can give them if I go back? These are beautiful seats & I'd love to match them.
I see the "emergency operation" removal procedure in the WIS but I doubt a general salvage yard will be willing to fabricate the tool. Is it really needed if the bevel gear is removed?
A last resort is for me to return to the local pick-n-pull for an inferior grade seat. Would I get enough current for the seat from 8 D cell alkalines or do I need to bring a true battery or power pack (which I don't own). Thanks!
