Falken Azenis PT-722 tires
Posted by spocko (more from spocko) on Wed, 23 May 2012 15:49:06

Just thought I'd post a note to say that I recently put a set of Falken Azenis PT-722 tires on my 2000 9-5 Aero sedan and so far I am quite pleased. My car is a daily driver, not a track machine, so I was looking for a good all-around tire with good tread life rather than max performance.

The PT-722 is advertised as a "premium performance touring" all-season tire. They are quiet and seem to have a good balance of comfort and performance for a car like the 9-5. In the 225/45-17 Aero size they have an outstanding 60k mike treadwear rating. One caveat is that they only have a W speed rating instead of the Z rating of the factory tires. If that bothers you, then you'll have to look elsewhere. (The Continental ExtremeContact DWS may be a good alternative with a Z rating for a few dollars more, but I decided to give the Falkens a try due to the lower price, higher treadwear rating and positive reviews.)

For reference, my last 2 sets of tires were Kumho ASX. They were pretty good initially but got very noisy as they wore down. My last set was so noisy after about 20k that I couldn't stand them anymore, despite having a decent amount of tread left (and no I don't have alignment problems). Thus I was looking for something that would wear better and hopefully remain quiet.

Compared to the Kumhos, the noise reduction was huge, although that probably would have been true with most new tires. I haven't noticed any loss of handling ability, and I have noticed some improvement in ride comfort. The Falkens also seem to hold the road better when going over bumps. Wear remains to be determined, but given the rating I am hopeful.

Falken is a division of Sumitomo Rubber, a Japanese company, so this is not a no-name brand. PT-722 is a fairly new model incorporating recent technology. Mine were manufactured in Thailand.

I have no affiliation with Falken, I'm just sharing info here.
