apparently it needed to go a little more than 90 degrees - gently played with it and it popped out with another almost 90 degrees and is draining just fine... I was probably being too careful - but I didn't want to be ham fisted and break it!
apparently posting on tsn is the solution to these problems...
that is one touchy drain plug though... mine was sure on tight. Anders WD40 suggestion I'm sure was what did it (once the stuff had time to work in there)... thanks!
