I now have a working car with new tstat, temp sensor, coolant, and no cel. I had hoped to do the cbp valve as well (precautionary, had a suspicious minor coolant drop a few months back but nothing since, and I already have the mackay kit), but I ran out of time...
Closing the drain valve was as interesting as opening it... not leaking yet, but it seems hard to tell if it is 100% closed - the user feedback of that valve is poor imho... ultimately I did it all by hand, but I like some of the tool ideas I saw when I searched here...
anyway, the useful things I learned:
1) temp sensor is easy to change even without doing the tstat. there was a good sounding suggestion to use a stubby 19mm gear wrench... local store didn't have one (18mm was the max size I could find in all sets and loose)... what is *waaay* easier is to put a deep socket 19mm over the whole sensor! it fits! takes seconds to change even if the rad hose is in the way. easiest part of the job... the key is to get a deep socket where the hex goes the full depth (or at least the depth of the sensor)... some don't...
2) no need to remove the upper rad hose (in spite of what the wis and fixmysaab say)... might make it a little easier to undo the bolts, but I had a brutal time getting it off and gave up. I'm still adapting to this new world from the c900's, but I one thing I don't like are the new hose clamps... (it is definitely tighter under the hood on the 9-5 also)...
other than that it was just a lot of awkward work with multiple extensions and u joints...
