Passenger side airbag inquiry.

I'm a California attorney who will soon be purchasing/leasing a 9-5, most likely an Aero, possibly the base model (SE model is out since automatic transmissions ruin an otherwise beautiful performance oriented sedan). I wonder about the design of the passenger side airbag system. For 2001 it seems the dash on the passenger side has no compartment that would open up to realese the airbag during a collision. I was wondering how the system worked since the whole dash seemed to be one long curved piece.
One salesman at a dealer nearby said the airbag would poke through the dash in the same manner as Jiffy pop popcorn and that the plastic there was weaker for just such a purpose. I do notice that my one complaint about the interior is some cheap looking plastic on the dash on the front passenger side. This guy wasn't very knowledgeable about Saabs in general so I am reluctant to rely on information he gave me. Can anyone verify that this is indeed how the passenger side airbag operates?
I also will mention how thoroughly impressed I was by the look of the two tone grey leather interior on the 2001 Aero I drove this past weekend. Overall the 2001 9-5 in grey leather is very sharp looking inside (cheap plastic dash on passenger side not withstanding).
