I was talking with a friend last night about a coworker of his who doesn't think a 9-5 is big enough for her family (I think one kid, 15 months old), and wants to get a safe minivan. Ahem.
Anyway, he asked me for all sorts of Saab info (he's got an '01 9-3, replacing his '84 900T, BTW). I talked about how Saabs typically do so-so in crash tests (although they do quite a number of tests that aren't required), but are always withing the top 5 in their classes for the lowest cost per injury insurance claim (actually, they came in best in class a few times). Which do you think is a better indicator of safety? Crash tests give a good starting point, but you can't draw conclusions about the entire car from one or two tests.
Funny aside: I recently took a course in using a computer simulation program for modeling crashes. The instructor said that everyone believes crash tests, except for those doing the tests, and no one believes computer models, except for the people doing the modeling. :)
