One additional benefit of "drain and fill" is the ability to remove ferrous material accumulated on the magnetic inside of the drain plug itself. Other material from worn clutch packs tends to be heavier and sinks to lower point in the case. One of the lowest is the drain plug location.
I read with great interest how Jeep and Volvo immerse the tranny inlet line in the bottom of a gallon of fresh fluid and the outlet line in an empty jug. Great for replacing exactly the same amount that came out with a simple turn of the ignition key, yet could be extraordinarily messy. Fearing the worst, I ended up crawling on my back with my Linear on jackstands. Unfortunately, I dropped the hot drain plug and was no longer able to restrict the outflow. ATF went everywhere! Another learning experience.
Happy SAABing!
