An update...
I received the vacuum pump and ATF from Amazon on Friday, and started the project yesterday, after a long drive to take my daughter to JFK airport.
Fluid extraction was really easy. I was able to use the wider tube on the pump. First insertion into the dipstick tube, I was disappointed how little fluid I got and how clean it appeared to be, but as I fiddled with the tube it went in further, and the fluid immediately was much dirtier looking, and all in I got between 3.5 and 4 liters (only metric markings on the pump). I refilled, checked the level, and then set out on about 1/2 hour of around town driving doing errands.
I then did a second fluid exchange, getting the tube in all the way the first time. Similar volume extracted and replaced, and called it a day. This morning, car was noticeably smoother in shifts as we drove to church and some errands, and the sluggish cold shifting was a thing of the past. I did the 3rd fluid exchange this afternoon, and am really happy with the way this seems to have worked out.
By the way, I purchased the MityVac 7201, which also allows for fluid dispensing. This feature made emptying the old fluid from the pump into a few gallon washer fluid containers a breeze with virtually no mess. You just have to be careful not to over pressurize the tank, as a couple of joints seemed to weep and dip slightly in the tubing. Cleanup was easy with some simple green.
Local tire shop and Sears took the used oil for recycling.
