Mine was in the exact same condition (not even a drip from the nozzle and I made sure it was completely clear).
I did as Stephen has directed and removed the check valve, popped the check valve open, cleaned out the goo, snapped it back together and put it all back together and has been working fine since.
I think that when I did have the check valve out I put towel around the hose end (from the pump that was connected to the check valve) and ran the pump just to make sure I was getting fluid at a nice pressure to the check valve.
