...unfortunately I can't be very precise. I had the same thing happen on my 2002 Aero and I did a little research and found a factory service bulletin (or "advisory" or something similar). It turns out this only occurs (normally) when someone closes the passenger side dash vents. This causes some sort of air pressure imbalance in the system that creates the situation of hot air being sent to the rear seat vent (which is on the same circuit as the passenger side dash vents). The solution was to remove the glove box and drill a couple of 8mm holes in the plastic air air vent found back there (this supposedly provided an escape route for abnormally high pressure resulting from the closed vents). Of course, you could always keep the passenger vents open as well.
Sorry I can't be more precise, but I did not do the work myself. Since the car was still on warranty, I took it to the dealer and showed them the service advisory and they performed the work. Also, I kept the original advisory, but it was many years ago and I can't retrieve it.
