It would be interesting to further identify the elements of a common scenario where a 9-5 reaches the point of uneconomic repair. One rule of thumb is if the body/frame/unibody is still good, you keep repairing. Taken that a step further, one may think that if the body, basic engine block components and basic transmission (excluding clutch) are fine, an owner should continue repairing. We all realize that tyres, brakes and exhaust are common wear items and would be excluded from consideration. Here in southern Ontario, the 9-5's do not appear to suffer extraordinarily high rates of failure due to sludge or suspension issues but salt can begin to wreak havoc on it's weak points after about 7-8 yrs unless treated. Due to the higher cost of frequent smaller repairs, e.g. fuel pump, water pump, oil pressure sender, alternator, thermostat, starter, starter cable, lower rad hoses, throttle body, drive belts, tensioners, etc, it may be strategic to bite the bullet and do a mid-life overhaul that would provide an extended interval of uninterrupted, trouble-free ownership. Whether shade-treed or sublet, the extra cost of multiple visits or repairs would weigh heavily on the continuous, perceived or real benefit-cost ratios dancing in our heads.
