I once had a non-start issue (crank yes, start no). I finally dug out an old post in the archives that indicated a bizarre situation where a faulty temp sensor (not thermostat) confused the engine mgmt system upon startup so that it failed to start (don't know if it failed to activate fuel or not. This is apparently an internal failure of some type or degree and it's best to go OE since the price diff is marginal. The part give little or no notice of imminent failure.
Anyway, at the time it was a bit of a long shot in my eyes but since an OE sensor is cheap, I replaced it and the car fired right up. No problem since. Due to low cost, it was one of the first items I replaced on the our 2nd new to me 9-5 to provide the prospect of Camry-like reliability.
Other pro-active/pre-emptive items include CPS, DI, all filters and fluids, valve at firewall and throttle body, vacuum line inspection.
