Wheel bearings or tires? Resolved

2008 9-5 Aero manual 74,000 miles
Been dealing with a worsening loud, speed dependent howl and wuh-wuh-wuh sound for a couple of months. Replaced front brake pads and rotors as they were tired, no change in sound. Researched front wheel bearings, ok, I can do that, but at $267 a piece from eEuro, ouch, and a day's knuckle busting labor.
In 20 years of driving four other SAABs with much higher mileages, I never had a bad wheel bearing. Started to think about the tires.
Car was bought used three years ago with newish set of Hancook Ventus V4es. Smooth and quiet, but not as sporting as my Conti Extreme Contacts on my 2006 Aero.
With the noise, the car was also pulling to the left. So to take the tires out of the equation, yesterday I swapped the Hankooks to my 2006's dedicated Conti snows and the sound is gone, the car sounded new. So I have at least one bad Hankook tire.
So I can buy two new Hankooks of an upgraded design, they don't stock the Ventus V4es anymore, for about $275 all in. Or I can upgrade all four to something you guys recommend, any ideas? I would prefer sporting feel over softer ride. Contis are pricey and I may not keep the 2008 Aero much longer. Any one have experience with newer Hankooks?
Interestingly, the first Hankook review I read on tire rack was "Great tire when new, very quiet, then two years in one tire had a belt slip and the tire made a lot of noise and the car pulled to the left." Well, same here, so I may pass on Hankooks.
Thanks in advance.
